At the moment, the devs of world of warships have agreed on the following compliment of ships modules.
First will be - main caliber, obviously involving a ship's main guns, turret and ammo.
Next comes the low caliber - which includes all the small calibers for ships that have many.
3rd will be torpedoes and launchers if any are available. Obviously that involves better launchers and torpedoes. Being an avid Silent Hunter 3 player I can immediately point out the importance of good torpedoes and also - what type of torpedo you fire - newer is not always better. German gas torpedoes have a visible bubble trail, but could move faster and with longer range than electric ones.
AA guns are also united in a single ship module.
Onboard aviation is also a single ingame module. For carriers obviously that involves the carrier air group, for battleships and cruisers - hydroplanes. Carriers might have an extra little bit - not sure if bomber wings customization will be available - the difference of taking off with bombs or torpedoes could change the battle.
Detection and fight control system is also another module - I'd guess that involves view range and weapon coordination so it might affect accuracy too.
Finally - ship hull. I believe that one is self explanatory - better hull with more armor, HP and so on.
What I am curious about is customization. In World of tanks - most of the time the top modules are the best, in some rare cases you can pick a different main gun.
However in WoWs there are many weapon systems and the decision which is best might not come so easily.
Pick weapons for example - you got main guns, secondary guns, AA, torpedoes and planes.
When it was released, the IJN Yamato had an extra set of secondary guns.
However by 1945, those had been replaced by more AA guns because of the ever greater threat by US carrier aviation.
How does that translate in World of Warships terms? Well - in a battle where there are few or none enemy carriers but plenty of lighter ships, your Yamato would benefit more from the extra secondary caliber guns.
On the other hand - in a battle where enemy aviation is strong, more anti-air capability can save your skin. Of course it all depends on Wargaming...they might take the easy way out and do linear upgrade paths.

New dev post and alpha test info
A new post on the dev blog shows how World of Warships development came to be. It seems the project was far older than we were aware, it was simply assimilated and renamed by WG.
Of course, back in 2004-2005, the project did not look so impressive, but thats progress for you!
Meanwhile alpha tester recruitment has started on the russian WoWs forum.
Alpha tester topic
However since its an alpha test, the vast majority of us will never get in. For starters, we are not russian and they want russians or russian speakers. Basically - serious testers, preferably ones that have been in WoT and WoWp or other games. I guess we will have to wait for closed beta before joining in.

World of warships dev blog starts up
With closed alpha test likely to begin in winter, the WoWS team has started a dev blog.
http://blog.worldofwarships.com/
Well, there isn't much on it yet, just a few articles, barely more than on my blog. Still it seems they are busy with the same things they do with the tanks - that is go to museums and start taking measurements. Which of course, is good, however considering how big ships are compared to tanks, I'd say every single boat introduced in the game will take quite the challenge and a small team working on it.
At least people will find it hard to complain about 1-2mm difference in armour thickness...Or would they?

How it all began...
Back in August 2011 with the growing success of World of Tanks, Wargaming decided to put some boats in the water too, announcing World of Battleships. In August 2012 it was renamed World of Warships, because well - its not just about Battleships, just as World of Tanks is not all about heavy tanks.
The official site http://worldofwarships.com/ got up and some artwork posted.
Nothing serious of course.
Aaaand of course the E3 2012 trailer - the thing most people were hyped about.
Unfortunately it was purely cgi, no gameplay or anything.
That is how it began...Now we wait for alpha. :)
